Pas de génocide pour Obama
Barack Obama a refusé vendredi de prononcer le mot de génocide en évoquant les massacres et déportations d'un million et demi d'Arméniens par les Turcs en 1915.A l'occasion des commémorations de ces massacres commis entre avril 1915 et juillet 1916, Barack Obama a publié un communiqué pour les rappeler et saluer les efforts de rapprochement entre Erevan et Ankara.
Lorsqu'il était encore candidat à la Maison blanche, le président américain avait parlé de génocide, terme utilisé par les Arméniens mais rejeté par la Turquie. Vendredi, il lui a préféré celui d'"atrocités".
"Il y a 94 ans, une des plus grandes atrocités du 20e siècle débutait. Chaque année, nous nous arrêtons pour nous souvenir du million et demi d'Arméniens qui ont été ensuite été massacrés ou conduits vers la mort dans les derniers jours de l'Empire ottoman", a dit Barack Obama dans un communiqué.
Malgré cette "précaution" hypocrite dans son vocabulaire, il a souligné que sa position n'avait pas changé depuis son investiture en janvier.
"J'ai une vision constante de ce qui s'est passé en 1915 et je considère que l'histoire n'a pas changé, a-t-il assuré. Je plaide toujours pour une reconnaissance entière, franche et juste de ces faits."
"La déclaration d'aujourd'hui du président représente un recul par rapport à sa promesse et un revers pour le changement vital qu'il s'était engagé à initier à propos de la façon dont l'Amérique considère le crime de génocide", a déclaré Ken Hachikians, président du Comité national arménien aux Etats-Unis.
Aujourd'hui, le ministère des affaires étrangères turc a jugé 'inacceptables' certaines parties du message annuel des Etats-Unis sur les massacres d'Arméniens perpétrés en 1915 sous le régime ottoman. Ankara n'a pas précisé exactement quelles parties du texte lui ont déplu.
Pour rappel, Barack Obama avait déjà abordé la question du génocide arménien perpétré par les Turcs en 1915 devant le parlement turc lors de sa visite en Turquie au début du mois mais avait également refusé de prononcer le mot "génocide".
Il faut "surmonter le passé après les événements de 1915" avait-il déclaré.
Pourtant sur le site internet de campagne de Barack Obama, on pouvait lire: "I also share with Armenian Americans -- so many of whom are descended from genocide survivors -- a principled commitment to commemorating and ending genocide. That starts with acknowledging the tragic instances of genocide in world history. As a U.S. senator, I have stood with the Armenian American community in calling for Turkey's acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide."
Ou encore: "I shared with Secretary Rice my firmly held conviction that the Armenian Genocide is not an allegation, a personal opinion, or a point of view, but rather a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence. The facts are undeniable. An official policy that calls on diplomats to distort the historical facts is an untenable policy ... and as president I will recognize the Armenian Genocide."
En français: "Le génocide arménien n’est pas une allégation, une opinion personnelle, ou un point de vue, mais un fait largement documenté et appuyé par un nombre important de preuves historiques. (…) L’Amérique mérite un dirigeant qui parle avec véracité du génocide arménien et qui condamne fermement tous les génocides. J’ai l’intention d’être ce président."
Quelle hypocrisie...
American Thinker: Samantha lied; people died. Samantha Power, who was Obama's number one foreign policy expert during the campaign and who now serves on the National Security Council, was seeking the support of the Armenian community during the campaign, and made promises on his behalf, stating he could be trusted.
As seen in the followingYou Tube video, she pledged that Barack Obama would commemorate the Turkish genocide against the Armenian community in 1915. That he would speak truth about it; that he was a person of incredible integrity; that he was an acknowledger of the history and a true friend of the Armenian community. That he was known for truth telling and sometimes "hard" truth-telling.

But the reason it's a worth noting is captured in this campaign video from Samantha Power, which made a big impression on Armenian-Americans, and in which she made the case that would bring "hard truth-telling" to the White House.
"What is amazing about Barack," she says, is, among other things, "his willingness as president to commemorate [the genocide] and certainly to call a spade a spade and to speak truth about it."
"He's a person who can actually be trusted, which distinguishes him from some in the Washington culture," she said.
It's an extremely painful issue to Obama's Armenian supporters. One Armenian-American correspondent who often complains furiously of anti-Obama media bias, David Muradyan, emailed me this afternoon:
Perhaps what stings more is his clever, yet deceitful way to say that his views have "not changed." And his use of "Mets Yegern." It's almost like he wants to appease both sides but can't because of political pressures. I understand that. But I think his statement is really deplorable. You can't in one breath say "my views haven't changed" (e.g., I still consider it Genocide PERSONALLY), but then use the word "atrocity" and not genocide. It really is a dishonest way to talk about the genocide. Either have the balls to call it genocide, or have the balls to not. But weaseling isn't respected, period.
Needless to say, when Obama appeared in front of the Turkish Parliament he remained all but silent on the Armenian genocide. Guess the Armenian genocide was one of those hard truths he just forgot to say.
Is Barack Obama or Samantha Power now part of that Washington culture that cannot be trusted?
